Mary Schrooten Obituary

Mary Lou Schrooten (Knight), aged 80, passed away on January 3, 2025, in Louisville, Kentucky. Born on August 1, 1944, Mary Lou was known for her vibrant spirit and compassionate nature, characteristics that defined her both personally and professionally.

Mary Lou was the cherished wife of Rolf, and a loving mother to Becky, Christine (Kyle), and Sonny. And stepmother to Saundra (Glen). Lovingly referred to as Nanny by her grandchildren: Amanda Brooke (Trevor), Emily, Savannah, Sierra, and Carson, and as a great-grandmother to Aidan, Addison, Konnor, and Stella Mae. Her siblings, David (Mimi) and Debbie, as well as her sister-in-law, Mary all survive her, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Mary Knight; her brothers, John and Bobby; her sister, Betty; and her brother-in-law, Don.

Mary Lou's professional journey was deeply intertwined with her passion for animals. A proud graduate of the Nash Academy of Animal Arts, she founded the beloved Totally Clips Pet Salon. Her dedication to animal care led her family to expand this venture, opening several more salons under her guidance. Her love for animals was palpable. She was particularly fond of dogs and enjoyed watching the swarms of hummingbirds on her back porch in her later years.

Beyond her career, Mary Lou had diverse interests. She was an adept plant grower, a hobby she cherished throughout her life. She won multiple ribbons at the Ky. State Fair and even won the prestigious Fred Wiche Award. Her early years were marked by adventures hunting for arrowheads and native artifacts, reflecting her proud Cherokee heritage. This connection to her roots was expressed in her long, salt-and-pepper braid and her fierce advocacy for the underdog-a testament to her giving nature.

Mary Lou will be remembered not only for her infectious laughter and generous spirit but also for her unwavering support and love for her family. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her and were touched by her kindness.

A private service will be held by her family to honor Mary Lou's life and legacy. Reflecting her lifelong commitment to the welfare of animals, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Arrow Fund at www.thearrowfund.org/donate/
