Marilu Uland

Marilu Uland, age 76, passed away on July 26, 2026, in Sellersburg, Indiana.

Born on February 5, 1950, in Vincennes, Indiana, Marilu was the third daughter of John and Ann Uland. She was a brilliant student, graduating from New Albany High School in 1968 after achieving a perfect score of 1200 on her SAT exams. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree from Bellarmine College in 1972, and her Master’s Degree in English Education from Indiana University-Bloomington in 1974.

Marilu dedicated her professional life to language and education. Over the years, she worked as a proofreader, textbook editor, teacher, and technical writer. Her adventurous spirit led her to move to California after college, and later to the Philippines, where she taught English for the Department of Defense. It was during her time in the Philippines that she welcomed her greatest joy, adopting her son, Michael, in 1981. After living in California and Florida, Marilu ultimately returned home to southern Indiana, where she spent the remainder of her life.

A true child of the 1960s, Marilu completely embraced the lifestyle and social issues of her generation. She was a fierce, lifelong advocate for social justice and human rights. Known for being strong-willed and sometimes hard-headed, Marilu lived life entirely on her own terms, and she chose to exit this life on those very same terms. Through it all, she was always unapologetically Marilu.

She is survived by her beloved son, Michael Uland of Jeffersonville, Indiana; her two older sisters, Carol Uland of Clarksville, Indiana, and Judy Keithley of Seattle, Washington; and her three younger brothers, John Uland (Lin) of Elizabeth, Indiana, Bob Uland of Georgetown, Indiana, and Jim Uland (Gina) of Leavenworth, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ann Uland.

In keeping with Marilu’s wishes, cremation has been chosen and no formal services will be held. Her family will honor her life privately, remembering her strength, intellect, and independent spirit.
