Guy Newcom Obituary

Guy Newcom, "Coach", passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the age of 93. He was born on June 09, 1928 in Sturgis, Kentucky to John Guy and Bertha Ford Newcom.

After graduating high school, he attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green on a football scholarship. Bowling Green is where he met the love of his life and wife of 68 years, Patricia Colovos Newcom. They were married on January 6, 1953. They had two sons, Guy Jr. and Greg.

After earning his degree in Education from Western, he began his career as a teacher and coach in Watertown, Tennessee, with stops in Providence, Kentucky and Crothersville, Indiana. In 1961 he moved his family to Clarksville, Indiana where he started and built a successful football program. Over his 17 years of coaching the Generals, the team compiled a record of 120-39-1 for a 75% winning percentage, which still remains the 32nd highest in the state. During that time, the team won 10 Mid Southern Conference titles ( 1964,65,67,70,71,72,73,74,76) and went to their first state playoffs game (1977). The Generals only had 1 losing season over the 17 year span. He also started the Little Generals football league in the late 60's, bringing the Clarksville Community family even closer together through youth football. He retired from coaching high school football in 1978. During the 2019 football season, a dedication ceremony was held honoring "Coach" by naming the football field after him.

In addition to his sons Guy Jr. (Deborah) and Greg (Ann) he had 6 grandchildren; Hope Helton (Terry), Ryan Micou (Michelle), Noel Newcom, Alaina Maggard (Bryan), Andrea Copeland (Austin), Arica Ollikainen (Robby). He also had 10 great grandchildren; Truman, Atlas (Hope), Keelyn, Ayla (Ryan), Zavier, Leighton (Noel), Hudson, Nash, Rowan, Remi (Alaina). As well, he leaves behind an extended family of countless players, managers, coaches, cheerleaders and Generals fans.

Coach's love of football was driven by his passion to help teach young men life lessons, so they would be better prepared for their adult lives that lay before them. The same way the game of football helped him.

Guy's greatest legacy will always be that he was a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He is preceded in death by both his parents, sister Frankie Hazel and brother Gene Newcom.
